3G Internet Bali
Fast internet connection for a normal price. This was not available to people in Bali for a long time. Most people were sentenced to high cost wireless connections and old fashioned dail-up internet. Now since a few months the bigger mobile communication companies such as Telkomsel, Indosat and Excelcom have launched 3G services on Bali.
These 3G services are the solution for an island as Bali because fibre optic solutions have been a problem in the past as we saw when the Speedy services were launched. High speed connections are possible with Speedy but they were influenced by the quality of the phone lines.
With 3G the providers mean HSDPA/3G/EDGE/GPRS. This because 3G can only 384kbps, but they mostly advertise with speeds of 3,2 Mbps. These speeds are possible when you use HSDP. The providers now also offer good pricing for their internet services. With normal wireless connections you needed to pay a few million rupiahs a month for 64/128 kbps connections. Now with 3G prices range from 300.000 to 800.000 rupiahs a month.
The only reason why not so many people made the move is because of the coverage. Indosat is already making some great moves to support HSDPA coverage on many places in Bali but Telkomsel is still a bit behind only covering some parts of Kuta and Denpasar even though they have promised to cover many other areas in the next few months. For example when we tried Telkomsel Flash near Benoa, Bali we only got a speed of 64kbps (GPRS) but with Indosat we got the speed we hoped for not the 3Mbps but still pretty fast.
It seems that finally broadband internet is arriving in Bali, which makes it possible to experience the internet on a totally different level. I am personally very interested to see how the wireless companies will react on the new players on the market, will prices drop or speed rise or both. We will see.
